The Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care laid its foundation way back in 1981 in Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Bangalore. The inception of Postgraduate courses in Anaesthesiology was in the year 1998. The Department is situated in the 4th floor of the hospital comprising of 21 Major and 11 Minor Operation Theatres with well equipped Preoperative and Postoperative Care Units. Our Department is providing comprehensive Anaesthesia Care to various clinical departments which include General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology. We have also extended our services to Superspeciality Departments which include Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Oro-maxillo-facial Surgery. Anaesthesia care is also provided to MRI and CT rooms and other ambulatory anaesthesia procedures. The Department also caters to the various ICUs which are well equipped with ventilators, multi-parameter patient monitors and renal replacement therapy.

  • To provide excellent Anaesthesia Care to various clinical departments.
  • To excel in the field of Critical Care Medicine, Comprehensive Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine.
  • To inculcate analytical, practical and communication skills in the students.
  • To impart quality education/ academics.
  • To create conducive working environment.
  • To train medical, paramedical and other personnel in BLS and ACLS.
OBJECTIVES:
  • To train Undergraduates in the basics of Anaesthesia Care and Emergency life support.
  • To train Postgraduates to become competent Anaesthesiologists.
  • To promote Research Methodology in the field of Anaesthesia.
  • To update our knowledge on the recent advancements in Anaesthesia Care.
The Department performs General Anaesthesia, Spinal and Epidural blocks, various nerve blocks, ultrasound-guided techniques. Pain Clinic services are provided round the clock throughout the hospital for acute and chronic pain. The Department has a well maintained Library, in addition to the Central Library, which includes all the necessary books and journals for the academic excellence. The Department seminar hall is air conditioned and is well equipped with audiovisual aids. Major O.T. equipments include Work stations, Anaesthesia Ventilators, Higher end Invasive and Non-Invasive Monitors including Entropy and NMT, Infusion Pumps, Fibreoptics, Nerve Stimulators and Ultrasound unit. It also imparts Hands on training on BLS and ACLS to all medical and paramedical personnel round the year. The Department also has an excellent Nursing Staff and other OT personnel for the efficient working of the Department.
