Department of Psychiatry
The department of psychiatry came into existence in the year 1991. After the initiation of a full fledged psychiatric unit with inpatient and outpatient facilities, the post graduate program (M.D.) in psychiatry was started in the year 1998. Till date eight postgraduates have completed their training in the department. Stalwarts in the horizon of Indian psychiatry have headed the department over the years. The department has evolved under the guidance of Dr. C. Shamasunder, Dr. A. Jagadeesh, Dr.N. Janakiramaiah. Dr. C.N.Krishnamurthy, and is currently headed by Dr.R.Raguram.
Dr. R.Raguram has worked as Professor of Psychiatry in NIMHANS, for over three decades. He was invited by the Government of UAE to initiate a postgraduate residency program in the country for the first time. Having accomplished this task, he joined the department in 2006.He is a well known teacher and a respected researcher in the field of psychiatry. Currently, he officiates as an invited member in the board of governors of the World Association of Cultural Psychiatry.
The department seeks to provide outstanding education and training in psychiatry to undergraduate medical students and post graduate trainees at KIMS. Our residency program aims at training psychiatrists in preparation for their leadership roles both in the public and private sectors. We also focus on offering the highest caliber of continuing medical education for psychiatrists and other medical practitioners.
Our research goals are to develop a deeper understanding of the causes of psychiatric illness, and to create more effective diagnostic, treatment, and prevention strategies for these disorders. We also aim to advance the understanding of psychiatric aspects of medical illnesses.
Our clinical mission will integrate state-of-the-art biological, psychological, and social approaches in the care of our patients and their families, as it provides the foundation for our teaching and research missions.
In all of the above activities, we shall adhere to the highest ethical standards as we strive to enhance the quality of care for psychological ailments.

Deaddiction program for substance abuse. Acute and continuing care for schizophrenia and mood disorders. Therapeutic services for somatisation and personality disorders.
Assessment and management of mental retardation, Services for those with specific learning disabilities, emotional disorders, school refusal.
Structured therapeutic programs for families with interpersonal and adjustment difficulties.
Therapeutic interventions for martial conflicts.
Counseling and brief psychotherapeutic interventions for clients with psychological distress.
Psychodiagnostic assessment of adults and children. Specialized neuropsychological assessments for those with cognitive deficits
CHILD GUIDANCE CLINIC:
All paediatric cases that come directly to the department or are referred to us, are seen at the child guidance clinic.
All post- test positive cases are counseled in the department on all OPD days. The service continues during the follow up phase also. The department is involved in conducting awareness programs on HIV/AIDS in schools and colleges.
ALCOHOL DEADDICTION CENTRE:
Wholesome in patient and outpatient care for the treatment of alcohol and substance dependence to effect abstinence, with regular follow up.
Need based care for the spouses of alcoholics.
Detailed evaluation and management of individuals who have attempted suicide.
CONSULTATION LIASON PSYCHIATRY:
Services provided for psychiatric complications of medical illnesses.
Specialised services for patients with psychiatric disturbances following neurological illnesses.
UNDERGRADUATE TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
20 hours of lectures in psychiatry, divided between the 6th term and the 8th term.
Clinical postings in psychiatry unit in the 5th term for 15 days.
Structured training program in communication skills for medical students & interns
Four to six weeks of supervised training in psychological assessment and counseling is provided to post graduate trainees in psychology.

The department receives students from centers of excellence abroad for specialized training. Over the years we have had doctoral students from University of Uppsala, Sweden and University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
The department is actively involved actively in the training of trainers program, under the Indo Canadian HIV awareness initiative.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION:
Professor Raguram was invited to join the Board of Governors of the World Association of Cultural Psychiatry, in recognition of his contributions to the field.
Post graduate students have won the award for the best original research paper in the state and zonal level.
Post graduate students have stood within the top five at the national level psychiatric quiz programs
The post graduate students, who trained in the department, meet for an annual academic and cultural event, thereby enabling us to maintain continuity of contact.
